Classic Shell adds the traditional Start Menu back to Windows 8 and enhances the File Explorer application. The menu allows users to quickly access recent files, programs and turn off their systems. The improvements to File Explorer make the application more suitable for power users.
Classic Shell offers three design options for the Start Menu: the classic menu from Windows 98, the two-column design from Windows XP and the more minimalist two-column design from Windows 7. All three options have a built-in search box even though the feature is not available in Windows 98 or XP. Additions to File Explorer include the display of the full path to the current folder in the title bar, customizable toolbar below the address box and a status box at the bottom that provides detailed information about the selection.
