Assurance Wellness is part of a government program affiliated with Virgin Mobile that provides free cellphones for eligible customers. In addition to receiving phones, the program participants also get to choose a phone plan, such as 500 free minutes each month for the first 4 months and unlimited free texts each month, as of April 2015. After the 4-month "grace" period, the minutes drop to 250 free voice minutes each month, but the unlimited free texts remain the same.
The government's Lifeline Assistance program makes this phone service offering possible for low-income households. Those households must meet certain criteria to qualify for the program, and the eligibility requirements vary by state; for example, Florida might require that the eligible household income per person be $16,245, as it did in 2010. A general requirement of program participants is that they must be on certain public assistance programs, such as Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Proof of income must be provided as well. Assurance Wellness is available to residents with temporary addresses.
Customers of Assurance Wellness, once qualified, can access and manage their account information from the company's online portal. The service does not bind program participants to any long-term contracts, activation and recurring fees or surcharges.
