To apply for the SafeLink program and receive a free phone, certain criteria must be met, such as an income below 135 percent of the established poverty guidelines or eligibility for certain federal assistance programs. These programs can be Medicaid, Section 8 housing, SSI or having a child that participates in a national free lunch program.
However, certain states also have specific requirements to be eligible to participate in the program. After making sure that they are eligible, applicants can go to the website and enter their zip code to see if the program is available in their state. If applicants live in a state where the program is available, then they are directed to a page where they need to fill out personal information, including birth date, social security number and the name of the program that qualifies the consumers for the free phone.
To prove eligibility, the applicant's information may be looked up in a state database. However, if a state does not have a database, then the applicant must furnish proof of eligibility. Once a consumer is eligible for the SafeLink wireless program, he or she is informed and a phone will be shipped to the address listed. The program offers 500 free minutes and unlimited text messaging for the first four months. After that time, users get 250 free minutes of phone time.
