Anonymous chat refers to apps on mobile devices or online where participants can chat virtually without revealing any identifying information. Chat rooms were a well-known feature in the early days of the Internet but have few equivalents on contemporary mobile devices.
In 2014, a location-based anonymous chat room named Yik Yak became controversial when child and teen users took advantage of the anonymity provided by the app to cyberbully other participants in the chat room. The founders of Yik Yak responded by trying to block the app geographically so it could not be used in schools.
In October 2014, Facebook announced an anonymous chat room app called Rooms, designed to let people interested in specific topics meet and chat in a virtual space using their mobile devices.
