Several alternatives to Apple's App Store are available to users with or without an iPhone or an iOS device, such as Google Play (formerly the Android Market) and the Amazon Appstore. Both of these digital marketplaces distribute free and priced applications for use with the Android operating system.
As of January 2015, Android and iOS are the predominant mobile operating systems used in the United States, constituting nearly 95 percent of overall use as per a Kantar study. Andriod maintains a slight edge over iOS. Other alternative application stores include GetJar, F-Droid and SlideMe, although Google Play remains the official app store for Android. As of July 2014, the Google Play store has published more than 1.3 million apps.
