As of June 2015, customers can purchase additional minutes for texts and phone calls by choosing a plan package from BudgetMobile.com, contacting the customer service department at 888-777-4007 or visiting a brick-and-mortar store. Budget Mobile refers to the addition of data or minutes as a "Top Up."
Customers can purchase a set number of minutes or opt for a plan with unlimited calls and texts. The company does not offer unlimited data packages, but smartphone owners can choose from options that offer between 250 megabytes to 2 gigabytes of data. Phones are updated with additional minutes immediately after a customer completes an online purchase, and a personal identification number is not required.
Qualifying customers receive a complimentary Budget Mobile cell phone, as well as 250 texts and 250 phone-call minutes at no charge. The cell phone provider participates in the federal LifeLine program, which offers affordable or free cell phones to individuals receiving assistance from government programs, including food stamps, Medicaid and Section 8. The program is restricted to one free wireless phone per eligible household, and eligibility is re-evaluated on an annual basis.
Coverage is not available in every area, and a Budget Mobile cell phone cannot be transferred to another owner. A 30-day warranty covers Budget Mobile cell phones if a malfunction occurs.
