How Do You Add an Icon to the Computer Desktop?

Both Windows and Apple computer owners can locate the item they want to create a shortcut for and right-click it to create a desktop icon. These icons are shortcuts for opening different software on the computer.

Users can add Windows icons by searching for the desired program in the "Start" menu. Right-click the program name and select "Send to" and then "Desktop." To add icons to an Apple desktop:

  1. Find the desired Apple program
  2. Search for the desired program to make a desktop icon in the "Finder" menu. The Finder icon is visible in the Mac Dock at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Create the Apple icon
  4. Right-click on the program name or double-click over it with two fingers. Select "Make Alias" to create the icon. Click and drag the new icon onto the Apple desktop.
