An Ethernet connection that is 100Base-T provides networked data transmission at speeds of 100 Mbps, or 100 megabits per second. It was introduced in 1995.
The 100Base-T became the IEEE 802.3u standard for data transmission. It operates as a shared media local area network when using a hub; this means that all nodes share the 100-Mbps transmission. Modern Ethernet devices support both 100Base-T and its predecessor, 10Base-T. The 100Base-T Ethernet connection is known as "Fast Ethernet" according to SearchNetworking. There are three types of wiring that can carry signals in 100Base-T: 100Base-T4 with four pairs of telephone twisted pair wire; 100Base-TX with two pairs of data grade twisted-pair wire; and 100Base-FX with a two-strand optical fiber cable.
