The X Games are extreme sports competitions that reward medals in sports such as snowmobiling, snowboarding, rally car racing and skateboarding. ESPN began the X Games in 1995 and, as of 2015, holds both Summer and Winter X Games events every year.
The X Games publicize many sports that are not a part of the Olympic Games and gives extreme athletes the chance to showcase their talents on a larger stage. The athletes are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals for finishing at the top of their events, and they win money for their participation. The events can range from timed races against other competitors to trying to achieve the most height in a competition.
