To start the 2015 Boys State Hockey Tournament, first-ranked Hermantown beat Spring Lake Park High School. Second-ranked Mahtomedi beat New Ulm, and third-ranked East Grand Forks beat New Prague High School. Fifth-ranked St. Cloud Apollo beat fourth-ranked Breck School. Those schools comprise the top eight for boy's hockey in Minnesota.

The Minnesota State High School League, which puts on the Boys State Hockey Tournament, features a Class AA and a Class A division, each with eight sections. The Class AA division is comprised of the largest 64 schools in the state. Independents, which is in the Minneapolis area, and South Suburban, which is in the Bloomington area, are two of the bigger sections in Class AA MSHSL hockey.

The top four teams in each class are seeded according to MSHSL coaches' determination. The other four teams are chosen by a blind draw. The bracket is constructed so that advancement beyond the quarterfinals sees the top-seeded team playing the bottom-seeded team. Seeds two and three play each other if they both advance.
