Who Were Some NHRA Drivers Killed While Racing?

Roger Garten, David Minx and Evgeniy Kern are among those who died while drag racing. Eight drag racers died while racing in 2014 and 2015 as of Nov. 1, 2015.

Garten was racing at the Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, California, on June 27, 2015 when his 1973 Mustang Nostalgia funny car crossed the center line and collided with the opposing driver. The 69-year-old Garten was thrown from his chassis and died in the hospital the next day.

David Minx was racing on a 220-yard track at the Houston Motorsports Park on Sept. 28, 2014. His 1967 Camaro went through a safety net before it crashed into water barrels.

Eugene Kern died at a Cup of Russia event on Sept. 21, 2014. His Nissan GT-R suddenly increased speed at the end of his sprint and crashed into a concrete barrier and flipped.

Alan Mouton's Ford Mustang GT500 broke in two pieces after his vehicle struck a guard rail at the Little River Dragway in Holland, Texas. Mouton died Sept. 12, 2014 when the front of the car crashed into a tree.

Lamont Akins died May 25, 2014 at the Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, Maryland. Akins' 1971 Plymouth Duster crashed into a barrier and ejected him from his vehicle.

Edson Beber died March 16, 2014 in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Driving on a scrape-surfaced beach, Beber's exhibition truck crossed the finish line before he lost control of his vehicle.

Other 2014 drag-racing deaths included motorcycle racer Nabeel Shah on June 29 in Trinidad and Tobago and car driver Waldy Vazquez on April 5 in Lakeland, Florida.
