Some of the top names in fantasy football for Week 1 in 2014 were Peyton Manning, Adrian Peterson, LeSean McCoy, Marshawn Lynch and Calvin Johnson. Running backs have traditionally dominated the overall rankings charts of most fantasy football leagues.
Running backs are popular in part because they have the ability to collect rushing yardage as well as receiving yardage. Especially in points per reception leagues, a pass-catching running back can frequently outscore all other positions.
There were several "stud" fantasy players at other positions as well in 2014, notably the quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, all of whom ranked in the top 20 overall picks. Jimmy Graham is the only tight end who cracked the top 20, and five wide receivers had the honor: Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas, A.J. Green, Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall.
Only one team defense ranked in the top 100, which is a rarity, as fantasy players typically choose team defenses and kickers with the final two picks in the fantasy draft. The Seattle Seahawks defense ranked at the 98th overall pick, coming off the blistering victory in Super Bowl XLIX. Nicknamed "The Legion of Boom," the Seattle defense had high popularity coming into the 2014 NFL season.
