Influential NASCAR racing deaths include Joe Weatherly, Dale Earnhardt and Adam Petty. Weatherly was killed on January 19, 1964, at the Riverside International Raceway. He was the reigning NASCAR champion in 1962 and 1963. He was known for his vibrant personality and once took practice laps dressed as Peter Pan.
Dale Earnhardt was considered a NASCAR legend. He won 76 races in his lifetime as well as seven point championships. He was known as "The Intimidator" because of his aggressive driving style. He died on the last lap of the Daytona 500 on February 18, 2001.
Adam Petty's death is notable because he was a member of the legendary Petty family. He was killed instantly at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway on May 12, 2000, at the age of 19.
