Luis Contreras, the El Salvador goalkeeper, made three key saves in the second half of his side's 0-0 draw with Guatemala on March 31, 2015 in Carson, California. Marco Pappa of Guatemala nearly scored off a free kick and a shot that hit the left post.
In the 67th minute, Contreras used both hands to deflect a shot off the foot of Pappa from 17 yards away. In the 76th minute, Contreras prevented an own goal when he dived to his right to catch teammate Milton Molina's header off a free kick by Pappa. In stoppage time, Contreras stopped a 26-yard free kick from Guatemala's Jose Manuel Contreras.
Guatemala had three good opportunities to record goals in the first half. In the 17th minute, Contreras covered the ball after Pappa had passed to Carlos Ruiz. Three minutes later, Ruiz intercepted a pass and broke downfield, but Raul Renderos forced Ruiz away from the ball. Then, in the 32nd minute, Pappa hit the post from 33 yards.
El Salvador had a shot in the 85th minute, but Nelson Bonilla failed to beat Carlos Castrillo.
The squads previously played in the Central American Cup in September 2014, when Guatemala emerged with a 2-1 victory over El Salvador. Pappa scored twice for Guatemala in that match, and Rafael Burgos scored El Salvador's goal.
