The University of Auburn finished in the number one spot in the final Bowl Championship Series rankings of 2010, ahead of fellow undefeated teams from the University of Oregon and Texas Christian University. Other notable teams that were in the BCS final rankings were the University of Oklahoma, Boise State University and the University of Utah.
The 2010 University of Auburn football team, led by eventual Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, won the Southeastern Conference with an undefeated season. Some of the ranked teams defeated by Auburn included the University of Arkansas, Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama. Auburn also defeated the University of South Carolina twice, including their match in the Southeastern Conference championship game.
The University of Oregon finished undefeated and won the Pacific 10 Conference. Oregon only defeated one team that was ranked in the BCS final standings, when they defeated Stanford University in October 2010. Oregon's number two ranking earned the team a place in the BCS Championship game, where the team lost to Auburn.
Texas Christian University finished undefeated in the Mountain West Conference. The team's signature win was a victory over the University of Utah in November 2010. However, Texas Christian University's strength of schedule was weaker than Oregon, which is why the BCS shut the team out of the championship game. Texas Christian University defeated the University of Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.
