The Blue Devils rallied from a nine-point deficit to take an eight-point lead in the final two minutes. As usual, the early rounds presented some of the most exciting finishes. The four overtime games on the first day of the second round set a tournament record.
No. 11 UCLA beat No. 6 SMU 60-59 on a goaltending call in the final 11 seconds, Ohio State overcame a 12-point deficit to beat VCU 75-72 in overtime and N.C. State eliminated LSU 66-65 on a hook shot with a second left. To get to the Sweet 16, Notre Dame beat Butler 67-64 in OT. The Irish then lost to Kentucky 68-66 on two free throws with six seconds left.
