The three races that make up the Triple Crown include the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. These three races were not collectively referred to as the Triple Crown until the 1930s.
The Belmont Stakes is a thoroughbred race that was first held in Elmont, New York in 1867 at Belmont Park. In 1875, Churchill Downs was built and was home to the very first Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky. This race is often referred to as the "Run for the Roses" and it is one of the most recognized horse races in the world. The Preakness began in 1873 at the Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland.
