For classification purposes, each school fielding a football team in the state of Texas is placed into a division, based on enrollment. From smallest to largest, divisions include 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A, with two subdivisions within each. Not all schools qualify for the state playoffs – only the top teams from each region, or "district." Teams are bracketed for the playoffs based on their performance during the regular season, and there is one champion for each subdivision, for a total of 12 state champions.
