The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) consists of 280 member schools, as of the 2015-2016 school year. The teams included in the KHSAA are any of those member schools that field a team in the sports sanctioned by the association. Fall sports sanctioned by the KHSAA are football, field hockey, cross country, volleyball, golf and soccer. Winter sports are wrestling, swimming and diving, and girls and boys basketball. Spring sports are softball, baseball, tennis and track and field. Sports activities sanctioned by the association are archery, competitive cheer, bass fishing and bowling. Both private and public schools are members of the KHSAA.
The KHSAA was formed in 1917, and the Kentucky Department of Education designated the association with overseeing high school athletics across the state of Kentucky. KHSAA awards 40 state championships in 16 sports. The association also keeps track of schedules, scores, past champions, stats and records for schools that submit official stat reports to the KHSAA.
