Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan are the tallest players in NBA history, both towering in at 7 feet 7 inches. Manute was part of the Dinka tribe in Sudan, which is among the taller populations of the world. Gheorge is from Romania, where he held the title of tallest man in Romania and second tallest living person in Europe.
Manute Bol is also the only known NBA player to have paid 80 cows for his wife and to have killed a lion with a spear. He grew up tending his family’s cattle, and defending them from lions that would try to poach them. He started playing basketball when he was 15 years old, and got drafted for the NBA in 1985 at age 23.
Gheorghe Muresan played professional basketball in France before he was drafted into the NBA by the Washington Bullets in 1993. Outside of basketball, Gheorghe has also taken up acting, starring in My Giant with Billy Crystal and as a ventriloquist in rapper Eminem’s video for the song “My Name Is.”
