Syracuse University fielded its first men's basketball team with the 1900-01 season. The team played just four contests during its inaugural year of play - without an official coach - finishing with a record of 2-2.
The team was recognized as National Champions by the Helms Foundation for the 1917-18 and 1925-26 seasons. The Orangemen also won the only National Campus Tournament hosted by Bradley University in 1951 - the only year the event was held. In program history, the school has recorded at least 37 NCAA Tournament appearances and five Final Four appearances, including a 2003 National Championship under coach Jim Boeheim.
