The sports mascot for the University of Maryland is a Diamondback terrapin, as of 2015. The mascot, named Testudo, was formally unveiled on May 23, 1933.
The University of Maryland selected the Diamondback terrapin at the suggestion of football coach Dr. H. Curley Byrd during a school-wide search for a new mascot. The university’s location, combined with the fact that the terrapin is native to the Chesapeake Bay, made the terrapin a sensible choice. Although the origins of the mascot itself are settled, the name is not. Many people believe that the name Testudo stems from testudines, the scientific designation for turtles.
