According to a 2013 report from CNN, football generates the most revenue among American sports. The total revenue generated by the National Football League in 2012 was $9.5 billion. Major League Baseball was second with $7.5 billion.
Third on the list was the NCAA with $5.3 billion followed by NASCAR with $4.1 billion and the NBA with $4 billion. While ticket sales and merchandise provide a great deal of revenue for all sports, the biggest difference between them comes from television broadcast rights. Football is by far the most popular sport on television. Even regular-season NFL games receive top ratings, and advertisers paid as much as $4 million for a 30-second spot during the 2012 Super Bowl.
