The game of soccer was invented in China during the fourth century BC. While the game was different to its modern day form, two opposing teams tried to kick a ball made of feathers and hair between two poles.
Evidence from ancient poetry describes a game very similar to soccer being played during the Warring States Period. The World of Chinese website mentions that the game was known as Cuju and was used to keep military soldiers in shape. Although other areas of the world can claim to have invented the sport, FIFA recognizes China as the birthplace of the sport because there is strong scientific evidence to support its claims.
