What Is a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield?

The M&P Shield is a handgun developed by Smith & Wesson. Multiple variations of the gun feature an assortment of accessories, including different ammunition, grips, skins and sights.

The M&P Shield is built to handle either 9-millimeter or .40 S&W rounds, and the gun features a slightly extended magazine with room for one extra bullet. The basic gun features a stainless steel slide and barrel, extended trigger guard and a fixed textured back strap. The M&P Shield is compact, with a barrel length of 3.1 inches and a weight of 19 ounces. Both the 9-millimeter and .40 S&W variants are built with striker fire action.

A common M&P Shield addition is the Crimson Trace Green Laserguard, giving the gun laser sight in addition to the white dot sights that come standard. The attachment is located beneath the barrel of the gun near the trigger, and it is available for both the 9-millimeter and .40 S&W variations. Another popular accessory is the Kryptek Typhon finish, which gives the gun a dark camouflage look beneath the slide and barrel. Most M&P Shield variants come standard with a thumb safety, but variants without a thumb safety are also available. Alternatively, Smith & Wesson offers a thumb guard accessory for the gun.
