The SIG Sauer P229 is an updated version of the earlier SIG Sauer P226 handgun designed specifically for the American market. It is used by the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security and numerous law enforcement agencies. .
Like the earlier military model P228, the P229 has a shorter barrel and more compact design. The primary difference between the models is the P229's greater versatility in the ammunition it accepts. With interchangeable barrels, the P229 can fire multiple types of ammo, including nine millimeter, .22 Long Rifle, .40 caliber Smith and Wesson and the .357 Magnum. Because of the heavier cartridges, the frame was made from the more rugged materials.
