Basketball officials control the game, ensuring that the rules are enforced. The lead referee in the National Basketball Association is called the crew chief.
In addition to the crew chief, an official basketball game generally has two additional referees. Their duties range from inspecting equipment before the game to calling violations and fouls to determining the final score.
The scorekeeper's duties include documenting the numbers and names of the players, keeping score, tracking penalties and recording time-outs.
The two timers' duties require that one operate the game clock, starting and stopping the clock according to the referees' whistles and instructions. The other timer operates the 24-second shot clock, which requires that the team in possession of the ball attempt to make a basket within 24 seconds during regular play.
