Full Answer

"Rip City" was coined in 1971 by the team's play-by-play announcer Bill Schonely. During a critical point in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Trailblazers guard Jim Barnett took a long-range shot that unexpectedly went in. Schonely then proclaimed "Rip City! All right!". Though the name happened serendipitously, the tradition continues with subsequent Trailblazer team members and fans. The "Rip City" roster as of 2014 includes Damian Lillard, LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews.
