Nebraska holds the permit draw and sells permits several months before hunting season. Both residents and nonresidents can apply for a deer hunting permit, although the fee is higher for nonresidents. The state requires hunters between the ages of 12 and 29 to complete a hunter education course to hunt. Separate courses are available for firearm and bow hunting, and a hunter must complete the corresponding course to hunt using that weapon. Both classroom and online courses are available.

Hunters over the age of 30 don't need to complete a course. Deer hunters under the age of 16 can only hunt when accompanied by a licensed hunter who is at least 19 years old.
