Andre the Giant, Chris Benoit, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, The Ultimate Warrior and "Macho Man" Randy Savage are some popular WWE wrestlers who are dead. Other famous wrestlers that have passed away include Dusty Rhodes and "Captain" Lou Albano.
Andre the Giant was a French wrestler who rose to stardom in the 1970s and 1980s. His fight with Hulk Hogan in WrestleMania III helped bring the WWE to national prominence. Andre the Giant also appeared as an actor in the cult film "The Princess Bride." He passed away on Jan. 27, 1993 following a heart attack due in part to his gigantism. He was 46 years old.
Chris Benoit was a wrestler in the 2000s. He won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in 2004 over Triple H. In 2007, at the age of 40, Benoit murdered his wife and son before committing suicide. Investigators later pointed to steroid abuse and resultant brain damage as a possible factor.
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper was a popular villain during the 1980s, often pitted against heroes such as Hulk Hogan. Though actually Canadian, he was known in the wrestling world for his Scottish image, often wearing a kilt or playing bagpipes when entering the ring. Piper also appeared in the cult sci-fi film "They Live." He died of cardiac arrest in 2015 at the age of 61.
