Popular junior college sports include basketball, soccer, tennis, bowling and lacrosse. Indoor and outdoor track and field, cross country, swimming and diving, and golf are also popular sports in junior and community colleges.
The National Junior College Athletics Association is the governing body for junior college athletics and sanctions 15 men’s sports and 13 women’s sports. Sports unique to men include baseball, football, ice hockey and wrestling. Sports exclusive to women include volleyball and softball. The NJCAA establishes rules concerning academic criteria, scholarships and employment practices in addition to other duties designed to promote fairness and foster athletics in junior and community colleges. Over 43,000 students across the country compete in over 50 national championships hosted by the NJCAA each year.
