The Orlando Pirates FC is a professional soccer team in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa. The team was originally based in Orlando, Soweto, but it is now based in Parktown, Johannesburg.
According to the team's website, the Orlando Pirates began as a group of teenagers who played soccer at the Orlando Boys Club in 1934. A boxing instructor at the Boys Club, Andries "Pele Pele" Mkhwanazi, encouraged the talented players to form a team. In 1938, they were competing in a minor division of the Johannesburg Bantu Football Association – without uniforms and barefoot. The Orlando Pirates played an important role in Soweto and throughout South Africa during the apartheid era, and the team continues to earn honors as one of the most successful in its league.
