In order to organize a pickleball tournament according to the tenets of the USA Pickleball Association, the first steps are to have a commissioner to organize the tournament and a venue where the tournament can be held. Then, the commissioner collects registration, sets up brackets and advertises the tournament.
The USAPA states that the event should meet its minimum standards, have enough courts to accommodate the number of players in the tournament and allow the number of matches necessary to be completed in the time allotted. The first tournament is likely to be a promotional tournament, which does not allow participants to receive tournament points within the USAPA system. However, it is not necessary to associate with the USAPA if the tournament is for purely recreational purposes. If the ultimate goal is to have an official tournament, then after completing a successful promotional tournament, the next tournament can be sanctioned by the USAPA after the application process is completed. Other things to consider when organizing a pickleball tournament are food, how to avoid eliminating strong players in the first round, what to charge participants when they sign up and whether the venue or the commissioner is to provide the nets and balls.
