Some of the best squirrel hunting months occur in the fall and winter when the temperatures drop. Squirrel hunting season varies based on the location but is often between September and October.
When hunting squirrels, head out on the first sunny day following a stretch of cold days. Squirrels go into semi-hibernation when it is cold and snowy, but they venture out in search of food during these sunny days. Look for well-lit areas of the woods and check edges and openings of timber. Also look at the sides of logging roads and two-track roads for the squirrels. They are usually out between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
