Since 2004, the Super Bowl has been played on the first Sunday of February. Before 2004, the Super Bowl was generally played in the middle or near the end of January.
Since 2004, the Super Bowl date has not been earlier than Feb. 1 or later than Feb. 7. The Super Bowl was initially played earlier due to a shorter postseason. As the league added more teams, the regular season was extended and the playoff system included more teams. The longer season caused the Super Bowl to be pushed to later in the year. The earliest Super Bowl was played on Jan. 9, 1977.
