Mel Blount's first season as a starter was in 1972 for the Pittsburgh Steelers secondary beginning lineup. During the 1972 regular season, Blount did not concede a single touchdown from his position at right cornerback. In 1975, the Associated Press named Blount the most valuable defensive player in the NFL. Before being chosen as a third-round draft pick in 1970, Blount played for Southern University.
