As of September 2015, 15 participants in WrestleMania VI are dead. Most of the wrestlers who have died did not reach their 60th birthday. The early deaths are commonly blamed on the heavy workload, painkiller abuse and steroid usage common in the WWE of the 1980s and 1990s.
The main event at WrestleMania VI was the championship match between Hulk Hogan and Jim Hellwig, also known as the Ultimate Warrior. Hellwig died in 2014 after a heart attack at the age of 54. Another key match in WrestleMania VI was the tag team championship; Andre the Giant was the most famous of the wrestlers in that match, and he died in 1993 due to heart failure at the age of 46.
Other famous WrestleMania VI participants who are now dead include "Macho Man" Randy Savage and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. Savage died in 2011 after a heart attack at the age of 58. Piper had the same cause of death in 2015 at the age of 61.
While cardiac issues are the most common cause of death among these wrestlers, some died for other reasons. "Earthquake" John Tenta died of bladder and lung cancer in 2006 at the age of 42. Dino Bravo was murdered in 1993 at the age of 44. "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig died of a cocaine overdose in 2003 at the age of 44.
