Uruguay has won the World Cup two times in its soccer history as of 2014. It won the first World Cup ever, which it hosted in 1930. It won its second World Cup title in 1950.
In the first World Cup, Uruguay defeated Argentina in the finals 4-2. A number of European teams were not able to attend the event because of the economic depression, as many team members feared they would not have a job when they returned to Europe. Nonetheless, a few teams did make it from Europe as Uruguay helped pay expenses. In 1950, Uruguay beat Brazil 2-1 in Rio de Janeiro.
