A water polo team consists of six field players and one goaltender. An entire team has 13 members. Substitutions are allowed, although players are required to enter the game from a specific area.
Each game is divided into four seven-minute quarters. Players score by throwing the ball into the goal. However, rules stipulate that the ball cannot be not submerged, and the field players may only use one hand to advance the ball. Ball possession is lost if a shot is not made within 35 seconds. When a game ends in a tie, there are two three-minute overtime periods ending with a shootout if the score remains tied.
