Seven innings are played in an official game of softball. Each inning is divided into a top and bottom half. During a top half of an inning, the visiting team is given the turn to bat and attempt to score.
The batting order rotates between each half, ensuring that the home team always bats second during a game. Softball is played between two teams, each with nine to 10 players. The first game of softball was recorded to have been played on Thankgsiving Day 1887 in Chicago, Ill. As of 2014, the official rules of softball in over 110 countries are managed and regulated by the World Baseball Softball Confederation.
