In a normal NBA basketball season, each team plays 82 games, with 41 at home and 41 away. Exceptions have occurred in the past where the season was shortened due to labor-dispute lockouts, such as the 66-game season during the 2011-2012 season.
The 82-game season was chosen after carefully considering several factors. Originally, teams played far fewer games until the league became a professional one. With players training and competing year round, the league had to optimize entertainment, revenue and expenses to determine an appropriate number of games in a season. With 82 games in the regular season, each team plays roughly three games per week.
