As of October 2014, there are 302 NCAA Division I baseball teams. These include six programs that transitioned from Division II up to Division I. Of these 302 teams, 64 make NCAA Tournament field, and eight of those tournament teams make the College World Series.
Division I baseball is the highest level of baseball sponsored by the NCAA. Lower divisions are Division II and Division III.
The six programs that moved up from Division II baseball include Abilene Christian University, Grand Canyon University, University of the Incarnate Word, the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Northern Kentucky University. The transition period from lower divisions to Division I typically lasts two to three years because of facility upgrades.
