How Many Different Merit Badges Are There? lists 137 Boy Scouts of America merit badges, as of 2015. In September 2015, Josh Rosher of Mission Hills, Kansas became the 266th Boy Scout in 105 years to earn every merit badge available.

Used as encouragement for boys to explore a wide variety of interests, Boy Scouts of America merit badges and their requirements change over time. Only 11 of the original 57 badges are still active, including Lifesaving and First Aid. Boy Scouts’ interests occasionally trigger updates to existing badges. For example, Boy Scouts of America redesigned the Auto Mechanics badge to an Auto Maintenance badge. Merit badges for Robotics, Composite Materials and Animation merit badges further demonstrate the Boy Scouts of America’s dynamic culture.
