Ronald Atkinson served as manager of Manchester United from 1981 to 1986, before Alex Ferguson became the manager. Atkinson won two FA Cups and one Charity Shield while managing the club.
In 1981, he inherited a team that had finished a disappointing eighth in the First Division under Dave Sexton. Atkinson led the club to a third-place finish in his first season as coach. He went on to win FA Cups in 1983 and 1985, though fan frustration mounted with Atkinson as Manchester United failed to finish in the First Division during his tenure. Atkinson began the 1986 season as coach, but a poor start resulted in his dismissal in favor of Aberdeen manager Alex Ferguson. Atkinson won 79 games with Manchester United.
