The largest lobster on record was an American lobster (homarus americanus) caught off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada on Feb., 11, 1977. The lobster weighed in at 20.14 kilograms, measured approximately 1 meter in length and was estimated to be 100 years old.
The American lobster is native to the northern Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina in the south to Newfoundland in the north. Once used chiefly as fertilizer, lobsters have become a multi-billion-dollar segment of the culinary industry. Nearly 200,000 tons of lobsters are caught on an annual basis, with American, European, slipper and spiny lobsters being the most widely consumed.
