The Boston Celtics Dancers are a dance team that was founded during the 2006-2007 NBA season. The team dances at every regular season and playoff game played by the Celtics at their home arena, the TD Garden, and also frequently appears at community events and functions throughout the season and in the offseason. A typical Boston Celtics dance squad features approximately 16 female dancers who are chosen via open auditions that take place in New York, Los Angeles and Boston.
The inaugural class of Boston Celtics Dancers was determined through open auditions sponsored by Foxwoods Resort and Casino, a major New England hotel and gambling business. The original team director was Marina Ortega, and the original dance squad featured 21 dancers before being trimmed in later years.
Like many NBA teams, the Boston Celtics employ dance teams rather than cheerleaders. This differentiates professional basketball from high school and college basketball, where games almost exclusively feature cheerleaders. The Celtics dancers hail from across the country, but the final team auditions take place in Waltham, Massachusetts, and the women are expected to live in Boston for the entire season. The Celtics' official website features biographies of each of the dancers on the team.
