There are urban legends of a haunted Girl Scout camp known as Winoka Lodge around the city of Springfield. However, there is no evidence of such a place existing. This urban legend is based on a series of murders that happened in Oklahoma.
In 1977 at Camp Scott, a campground in Locust Grove, Okla., three Girl Scouts were raped and murdered. The campground was immediately evacuated and closed. The prime suspect, Gene Leroy Hart, was arrested and charged with the crimes. He had successfully broken out of prison in 1973 and remained at large until his arrest a year after the incident. He was later acquitted by a jury. As of 2014, no one has been convicted of the murders.
