Some of the most important tips when trying to do splits are to warm up, stretch, breathe normally and practice. Failing to follow these basic tips can cause your muscles to be tense, which could potentially lead to injury.
When stretching, pay attention to the different muscle groups used in splits, including the groin, hamstrings, lower back, hips, buttocks and calves. Splits also require a good balance between strength and flexibility. If you have the flexibility to do a split but your back muscles are not strong enough to stabilize your lower back, hips and legs, there is a higher chance for injury.
