Louganis was born in 1960 and first attracted attention as a competitive diver at the age of 11 when he achieved a perfect score at the 1971 Junior Olympics national competition. He won his first Olympic medal, his only silver medal, in 1976 competing in the 10-meter platform dive. He would go on to win gold in this event and in the 3-meter springboard at both the 1984 and 1988 Olympic games. He also won a number of gold medals at the Pan American Games, FINA World Aquatics Championships and Summer Universiade throughout the late 1970s and the 1980s.
Aside from his amazing diving career, Louganis also drew national attention when he was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 after the Olympic games in Seoul. Louganis revealed that he was homosexual at the Gay Games IV in 1994, and he spoke about his diagnosis publicly during an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1995.
