Full Answer

Babe Ruth is the only player with that last name in Major League Baseball history. While his birthday is February 6, 1895, he lived much of his life believing he was born February 7, 1894. Ruth's parents had a total of eight children, but only Ruth and his sister Marie Margaret survived infancy.

On June 23, 1917, while pitching at Fenway Park in Boston, Ruth was ejected for arguing balls and strikes following walking the first batter of the game. He was relieved by Ernie Shore, who went on to retire all 26 hitters he faced. Ruth is still credited with being a part of the combined no-hitter.

Ruth is the only player since the turn of the 20th century to lead his league in triple crown categories as both a hitter and a pitcher.

On June 3, 1920, the Boston Red Sox sold Ruth to the New York Yankees. Over the next 44 years, the Yankees would go on to win 29 American League pennants and 20 World Series, while the Red Sox won one pennant and no World Series titles. The move quickly became known as "The Curse of the Bambino."
